7. Dysmenorrhea from Cold

1 scruple–1 dram; taken with a decoction of Fennel, Anise and Mastic for Stomach Pain; with Mugwort Wine for Cold diseases of the Uterus

1. When 2 drams of Opium were added, it forms Greater Triphera with Opium. This is used for similar conditions, but especially for conditions with severe Pain and is stronger to stop Cough.
2. Poppy seed could be used in place of Opium.
3. To strongly promote Menstruation, take with a decoction of Madder, Siler Montane, Fenugreek and Chickpeas.
4. Also to promote Menstruation, add Savin, Myrrh, Storax, Bdellium or Opopanax according to need.
5. Stomach pain, take with Decoction of Fennel, Anise and Mastic.
It is “… used for all cold pain of the Stomach, as soon as one has taken thereof, then sweat does break out upon one”.
“It is good for all Melancholic women which cannot sleep, and they that have gotten this anguish and vexation through any disease of the Matrix [Uterus]”.
“Likewise also for those which be burdened with any slimy matter in the Lights [Lungs], and for all them that spit Blood, whether it be beneath or about; and if that one leave out the Opium, then should the same be good for to advance the fruitfulness of Women”. (Wirtzung)
“This is a present medicine against all inward diseases of a woman, and against the pain of the Stomach taken with decoction of the seeds of Fennel, Aniseed, Mastic; it cures all diseases of the Matrix [Uterus] of cold taken, with wine wherein Mugwort was sodden in, also if you make a round piece of silk or wool tossed, after the fashion of a finger, anointed with oil of a weasel, or such other oil, and put it into the Matrix, it will move the flowers of women which do not conceive, and it is also a singular remedy for children which speak in their sleep or cannot sleep, if it be taken with wine wherein Mandragore or Elderne has been sodden in: it will also help them if it be taken with woman’s milk, according to the quantity of the little grain Cicer [Chickpea]”. Note: this was typically made with Opium. It was recommended to be used without Opium for diseases of the Uterus and to promote Menstruation. This formula works well without Opium for all indications, but will relieve pain and promote rest more powerfully with Opium.
Note also that the Triphera formulas are generally based on Myrobalans, being a Latin name for Triphala. However, this formulas which bears the name Triphera doesn’t contain Myrobalans. Its name was said to be derived from its strengthening effect.
