Amount


1 oz.

Preparation:


Powder the herb and cover with enough Spirit to cover it 4 finger breadths, and seal in a vessel. Steep for 8 days in a warm place; then filter. This will give a Ruby-colored Tincture of St. John’s Wort. A little White Sugar was often added to this Tincture.

Moves the Blood, Eases pain, Calms the Spirit

Use:


1. Melancholy, Depression
2. Fear, Paranoia, Anxiety
3. Mental Illness
4. “Stupidity”, “Foolish Imaginations”, “Madness”
5. Pain following Trauma, Internal Bruising
6. Headache, Migraine
7. Neuralgia
8. Incontinence, Bed-wetting
9. Scanty and Difficult Urination
10. Fever, Viral infection

Dose:


15–60 drops or more

Cautions:


None noted

Modifications:


1. Combines well with Tincture of Saffron or Balm

“It is an excellent thing in all contumacious Diseases: It helps weakness, provokes Urine and the Terms, and is profitable for most diseases of the Reins and Bladder: It is also good against Melancholy, Stupidity and Trouble of Mind, and takes away all foolish Imaginations”. (Salmon)

The Tincture of St. John’s Wort is also beneficial to move the Blood, clear Stasis and ease Pain. It has been much used traditionally for Pain including Migraine, Spinal Pain, Pain following Trauma including Internal Bruising etc. St. John’s wort was long used as a Wound herb.

It also has a long history of use of Madness, Melancholy, Stupidity, Fear and Paranoia, Troubled Mind, and ‘Foolish Imaginations’, as well as for Witchcraft etc. Of course, modern usage has expanded this to Depression and Anxiety.

Other uses include promoting Urine in Scanty and Difficult Urination, as well as for Incontinence and Bed-wetting; stopping Bleeding, including Vomiting or Spitting Blood, and Blood in the Urine.

It is also effective for Fever, Infection (including Viral Infection), as well Venomous Bites and Stings.
