This was “accounted by authors as the highest remedy against an Asthma, Phthisic [Consumption], and an inveterate Cough”; also for shortness of breath.
Recommended by various authors as a valuable treatment in Hectic Fever and Consumption, being given twice daily: “Beguinus prescribes it rather to the true Hectical, or such as are in deep Consumptions, to be given daily, Morning and Evening, either alone, or in some Pectoral Decoction”. (Salmon)
It also benefits the Heart (for which Avicenna commended it), and is therefore useful in Heart disease, especially in the old and weak. Traditionally regarded as promoting Strength and Vigor, improving Intellect and Will, and improving the Complexion. (Bates, Salmon)
