Substitute Medicines

The following list, derived from numerous sources, both old and new, Eastern and Western, gives a list of substitutes for various traditional medicines.

Substitution occurs in all Traditions for a variety of reasons:
    i. Medicine is unavailable
    ii. Medicine is too expensive
iii. Medicine is too toxic or illegal etc.

It is important to appreciate that substitutes have been long used, even during the period in which a formula was written. And this is still done in modern times. For example, when the Tibetans moved to the Buryat regions of Russia (Siberia), and to Northern India, they were forced to replace many of their native herbs with local medicines. Likewise formulas written by Arab physicians and then used in Europe often needed modification as some of the Arab medicines were unavailable.

Thus this list should enable those who wish to recreate or rewrite traditional formulas to make necessary changes.

A number of varied sources have been used, and while most substitutes appear logical, some are less so. The listed herbs will not automatically be fit to substitute the herbs for which they are listed for in all circumstances.

In cases where an unknown or uncommon medicine is substituted for a well-known or available medicine, the substitution is given both ways. For example, Ephedra fruit are used as a substitute for Amomum subulatum in Tibet. So the latter is listed as a substitute for Ephedra fruit.

Despite all the sources used being reputable, there are occasionally some substitutes that make no sense (to me) or seem downright wrong.

The golden rule: always make sure the substitute herb is suitable for the desired intentions, or for the individual patient for whom it is written, or that it achieves the same desired function within the formula, rather than using simply because it has been listed as a substitute.
