Strengthening and Tonic Formula
Strengthening and Tonic herbs and formulas are used either to strengthen the body when weak, support the body during chronic disease and old age, or as a health tonic.

Tonic Recipes:
1. Rice boiled with Milk. Honey, Mastic, Cardamon, Almond meal and others can be added.
2. Boil Walnut, Pistachio, Almond, Raisins, Dates and Figs together and drink the tea.
3. Powder Sesame seed and Walnut, mix with water to make a thick drink and add Honey.
4. Steep Dates in water, then blend with Milk and a little Cardamon and drink.
5. Chicken boiled in a closed pot in wine with Saffron.
6. Chicken and Parsley broth
7. Prologed boiled feet of Deer, Sheep or Lamb makes a nourishing broth.

STRENGTHENING PILLS Gum Arabic Tragacanth ½ oz. ea. Licorice juice 1 oz. With Sapa, qs, form a pill mass. (Fuchs, Opera Didactica) TABLETS FOR LUNG WEAKNESS Fox Lungs prepared 2 drams Licorice juice 1 ½ drams Annis Fennel seed 1 drams Sugar sufficient Form Pectoral Tablets. Cough, Wheezing and Asthma from Lung weakness. (Fuchs, Opera Didactica) TO STRENGTHEN THE HEART AND ORGANS Aqua Vitae 1 pint Gold a piece Saffron 1 dram Cinnamon 2 drams Take a piece of Gold, heat it red hot and quench in the Aqua Vitae a number of times, the more the better. Then add the Saffron and Cinnamon beaten. Steep 4 days, stirring every day. Strain and filter. It warms the Heart and Stomach and strengthens all the Organs. It is especially good for the elderly and after long illness. STRENGTHENING BATH Sage, Rue, Betony, Mint, Wormwood, Nettle root, Marjoram, Mugwort, Strawberry leaf, Lovage, Juniper with berry 1 handful each Bayberry half pound Sulphur 1 pound Cut the herbs, mix and divide into 2 bags. Boil a bag in sufficient water and bathe in it for 3 days, then use the second bag and repeat. Very effective for the weak and during convalescence. It was said to be useful for corruption of the blood or marrow, and was said to give strength to the limbs and whole body. (Brunschwig, 1561) |
ANEMIA FORMULA Astragalus Huang Qi 30 grams Dang Gui 15 grams Jujubes (Da Zao) 5 grams Chicken Breast 2 pieces Steam for 4 or 5 hours. (The Formulas of Dr. John H.F. Shen) QI AND BLOOD TONIC SOUP Codonopsis Dang Shen 12 grams Dang Gui 9 grams Goji berries 9 grams Jujubes (Da Zao) 5 pieces Cook with a chicken to form a soup. |
