Preparation:


Powder equal amounts of each herb separately, then mix.
Decoct 10 Jujubes (Da Zao) in 300 mls of water down to half, strain and add 1 gram of the powdered herbs to the decoction, stir well, and drink warm. If the patient is weak or does not have a strong constitution, use only 500mg of powdered herbs.

Today the powdered herbs in doses of 500mg–1 gram are often used in capsule form along with a decoction of Jujubes.

Function:


Purges Water

Use:


A. Water stagnation in the chest, coughing with sharp chest pain, shortness of breath, breathlessness, dry heaves, epigastric distention, headache, dizziness and a deep, wiry pulse.
B. Water stagnation in the abdomen: generalized edema in the lower body, abdominal fullness, dissficulty urination
1. Pleural effusion
2. Pleuritis (has been proven clinically effective)
3. Severe Edema
4. Ascites
5. Acute or Chronic Nephritis

Dose:


The above is taken as a dose. One doses is usually effective and will promote passage of water in the stool.
If the condition is not improved after 24 hours, repeat the formula, adding 500mg more of the powder.

Cautions:


1. This is a strong cathartic medicine, only used in urgent cases and in relatively strong individuals.
2. Not used in Pregnancy or the very weak.
3. Do not cook the herbs Euphorbias and Daphne in water.

Modifications:


1. If the patient is weak, take with tonic medicines.
