Uses:


1. Clears Heat and Damp:
-Diarrhea, Dysentery
-Fever, stifling sensation in Chest, Thirst
-Painful or Dribbling Urine
-Auxiliary for Jaundice

2. Clears Heat, Resists Toxin:
-Fever, Irritability, Thirst
-acute Cough with yellow sputum
-Heat-types Sores, Infections and Swellings
-important herb for acute bacterial infections

3. Clears Liver Heat:
-Headache, Red Eyes and Face, Restlessness, Anger, Bitter taste in the mouth
-Hypertension associated with Liver heat

4. Clears Heat, Stops Bleeding:
-Heat-type Blood in the Urine or Stool, Coughing or Vomiting Blood

5. Clears Heat, Calms the Fetus:
-Restless Fetus (excess movement or kicking)


Dose:


Decoction: 3–9 grams
Powder: 1–3 grams

Substitute:


1. This is similar in use to Barberry bark in the West which is probably a suitable substitute.
2. Picrorhiza is also a possible substitute

1. Acute Fever with Heat and Toxin, Scutellaria Huang Qin with Forsythia Lian Qiao, Saposhnikovia Fang Feng, Rhubarb Da Huang (as in Fang Feng Tong Shen San)
2. High Fever, Irritability, or Acute Swollen Sore Throat, Boils, Abscesses, Scutellaria Huang Qin with Coptis Huang Lian (as in Huang Lian Jie Du Tang)
3. Fever and irritability; damp heat diarrhea, Jaundice; red and swollen eyes; carbuncle, Scutellaria Huang Qin with Green tea (decoct the Scutellaria, then infuse the Green tea)
4. Alternating Fever and Chills, Scutellaria Huang Qin with Bupleurum Chai Hu.
5. Malarial disorders, Bupleurum Chai Hu with Chinese Pulsatilla Bai Tou Weng, Scutellaria Huang Qin, Areca Bing Lang (Betel nut)
6. Lesser Yang disorders with Chills and Fever, fullness in the chest and hyponchondria; and acute Phlegm-Heat disorders, Scutellaria Huang Qin with Bupleurum Chai Hu, Pinella Ban Xia.

10. Broad-spectrum antibacterial for Heat and Toxin, Scutellaria Huang Qin, Coptis Huang Lian is often combined and Phellodendron Huang Bai, known as ‘San Huang‘, the ‘Three Yellows’. To Make it stronger, add Gardenia Zhi Zi (as in Huang Lian Jie Du Tang). This again, can be made stronger with the addition of Rhubarb (Da Huang).
