Pediatrics-Diseases of Children

Pediatrics is a special branch of Medicine dealing with diseases of Infants and Children. In general, Children may be treated with the same medicines used to treat adults, with a proportionate reduction in dosage (click here for doses used for Children). Nevertheless, there are some special formula used specifically for children and there are some diseases which are peculiar to children, so we will deal with them here.

Regimen for the Newborn

‘When the child is first washed at the Birth, wash it in a Decoction of the green bark of Willows: Hereby the children are not only preserved from the Epilepsy, but from any other lingering consumptive Disease. It is a specific in inward weakness of Children’. (Practical Chymistry, John Hartman, 1670)

Rubbing the baby with Almond oil or other vegetable oil after bathing is very beneficial. In cold climates, applying warm oil protects from the Cold. Oil also nourishes and strengthens the baby.

Umbilical Hernia
1. ‘When a child cries very much, a swelling may form in the groin or navel. This is a hernia. Some advise that it should be rubbed with cardamon (bishop’s weed) and sprinkled with egg-white, a thin bandage being applied tightly over the place. Others advise burnt bitter lupin, as an infusion in wine and myrrh, placed over the part. Stronger remedies are: hot styptics (astringents), such as myrrh; cypress bark; cypress fruit; aloes; acacia fruit’. (Avicenna, Canon)
2. Beat Mastic, mix with Egg white to a paste, spread on cloth and apply to the Navel firmly once it has been reduced. (Gabelhover, 1599)
3. An ointment made from fresh Comfrey root is very useful.
4. Take Aloe ¾ oz., Frankincense ½ oz.; powder, mix with egg white and bind to the rupture.
