Picture Ointments
Ointments are oily pastes made for external use. They are made with oil or fat to facilitate the penetration through the skin.

There are 2 main types of Traditional Ointment bases:
  1. Mix of Oil (Olive, Sesame etc) and Wax
  2. Clarified animal fat, mixed with Oil, Wax, and/or Resin
Today there is also the option of Vaseline and vegetable-based vaseline substitutes.

Ointments can be made with decocted or infused oils mixed with Wax or Fat; they can be made by adding Essential oils to an ointment base; or powdered herbs and resins can be added to a hot oil base.

A Salve generally has similar consistency to an ointment, although may not have an oily base.
