Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic progressive disease involving demyelination of the nerves.

Symptoms may include Numbness, loss of motor coordination, slurred speech, severe fatigue, failing vision, loss of bladder control etc.

In Traditional Medicine, it falls into such categories as Deficiency of Qi, Yin and Yang or Essence and Internal Wind causing Spasms and Tremors. It overlaps the Traditional Western diagnosis of Numbness, Paralysis and ‘Shaking Palsy’ (Parkinsonism and related diseases), manifesting with both tremor and loss of function. Sometimes, especially in younger people it may be associated with Damp-Heat.

Tibetan Medicine generally observes Multiple Sclerosis in women as being of Wind-Bile (rLung-mKhrispa, Wind-Heat) type, while that in men is often Phlegm-Bile (Bad Kan-mKhrispa, Phlegm-Heat). Acute flare-ups manifest as Wind-Bile (rLung-mKhrispa, Wind-Heat). This type of Wind-Heat is generally associated with Yin or Essence deficiency which is associated with the structural degradation of the nerves.

Heat is associated with Inflammatory responses which may cause destruction of the myelin sheath. Damp and Phlegm obstruct the nerves, hinder their function and nutrition, while Wind, being drying in nature, effects the fatty acids (Yin) which nourish the nerves.
