Ligusticum Chuan Xiong & Angelica Dang Gui


Ligsuticum Chuang Xiong (Sichuan Lovage root) moves the Blood and Qi, and promotes Menstruation. It is also very effective for external Wind-type Headache and Headache from Blood stagnation, Dizziness, Pain and Skin conditions associated with Wind (itching).

Angelica Dang Gui nourishes and enriches the Blood, promotes circulation of Blood and regulates Menstruation. It also helps clear Cold, moistens the Intestines and is used to promote the healing of Sores and Abscesses.

Together, these two medicines effectively regulate Blood circulation, and Menstruation in particular. Moving the Blood is apt to drain the Blood, and nourishing the Blood is apt to cause stagnation. Therefore, the combination of these two medicines nourishes the Blood while keeping the flow of Blood active.

It is a primary combination for Menstrual disorders. It is good for Amenorrhea, Dysmenorrhea, Irregular Menstruation, as well as conditions such as Headache or Migraine, weakness, bloating or Hyperemotionalism when associated with the Menstrual cycle.

Ba Zhen Tang (Eight Treasures), Bu Gan Tang, Bu Yang Huan Wu Tang, Dang Gui Shao Yao San, Die Dan Wan (Trauma Pill), Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang, Fang Feng Tong Sheng Wan, Ge Xia Zhu Yu Tang, Shao Fu Zhu Yu Tang, Shen Tong Zhu Yu Tang, Sheng Hua Tang, Si Wu Tang (Four Substance Decoction), Tao Hong Si Wu Tang, Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang, Yi Gan San

Cautions:
They are not used (unless corrected) if there is Poor appetite or Diarrhea associated with Cold and weakness. Costus, Cyperus rotundus or Tangerine peel, Red Dates and Licorice can be added to correct them in poor digestion.

Additions:
1. Add Paeonia Bai Shao and Rehmannia Shu Di Huang to form Si Wu Tang, the premier Blood nourishing formula of TCM. This is used for many different Gynecological conditions associated with Blood deficiency marked by pale face and tongue, low pulse, a feeling of cold.
2. If to Si Wu Tang is added Safflower and Peach kernel, it forms Tao Hong Si Wu Tang. This nourishes the Blood while moving the same and break Blood stasis. It is especially useful for Menstrual pain with thick, dark, clotted Blood, but is also used for Headache, Eczema, Infertility etc.
3. If Paeonia Bai Shao, Codonopsis Dang Shen, Atracylodes Bai Zhu, Poria Fu Ling and Licorice is added, this combination strengthens both Qi and Blood and is stronger for Menstrual disorders with chronic deficiency, as well as other types of chronic weakness including Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, insufficient Lactation, Postpartum weakness, during Chemotherapy etc.
