Dysmenorrhea

Menstrual Pain
Menstruation requires the smooth flow of Qi and Blood and a regulation of the hormones to achieve regular, pain free menstruation. Mild Menstrual pain that may be transient is caused by Qi stagnation and will usually be attended with PMS, excess emotions and breast tenderness. When the pain is stronger, more chronic, and of a fixed nature, Blood stasis is indicated. This usually comes with clotting, dark blood and sharper pain.

Cold pain will be relieved by warmth and will have a slow pulse whereas heat type pain will be aggravated by warmth or massage.and comes with a fast pulse. Acute heat type pain that is severe and acute can indicate a serious inflammation or infection which should be atteneded to urgently. Damp obstruction manifests similar to Cold but is usually attended with clear vaginal discharge. When Damp-Heat is involved there is yellowish foul-smelling discharge.

Blood and/or Qi deficiency may be involved, and in this case, Qi and Blood movers are combined with tonics.

Western women should be encouraged to avoid cold foods and drinks, especially in the days leading up to and druing the menstruation.
