Traditionally coarsely powdered and boiled to form a draught; today the above may be decocted to take in two doses over the day.
Also used in Powder or Pill form.
Clears Wind and Damp, Opens Obstructions, Tonifies Qi and Blood, Bones and Joints
1. Arthritis, especially of the lower body, lower back, hips
2. Rheumatoid Arthritis
3. Osteoarthritis
4. Chronic Lower Back pain
5. Lower Back Disc Prolapse
6. Lumbar vertebrae degeneration
7. Ankylosing spondylitis
8. Chronic Neck pain and stiffness
9. Sciatica
10. Numbness, mild Paralysis, Immobility, Atrophy of the lower limbs
The above is taken daily in 2 divided dose.
If used as a powder, the dose is 3 grams, 2–3 times daily.
None noted
1. If there is only mild Qi deficiency, use Codonopsis Dang Shen in place of Ginseng.
2. If there is more pronounced Kidney Deficiency, Rehmannia Shu Di Huang is used in place of Sheng Di Huang.
3. If there is heat, Paeonia Chi Shao can replace Bai Shao.
4. Severe pain or Rheumatoid Arthritis, add prepared Aconitum Fu Zi
5. Also for Severe pain, when used as a powder add prepared Aconitum Fu Zu, prepared Nux Vomica (Ma Qian Zi), Scorpion (Quan Xie)
6. Also for Severe pain, add Bungarus (Viper) Bai Hua She and/or Earthworm Di Long and Safflower Hong Hua.
7. Also for Severe pain, add Scorpion (Quan Xie), Asarum Xi Xin, Bungarus (Viper) Bai Hua She
8. Severe Cold, add prepared Aconitum Fu Zi and dry Ginger (Gan Jiang)
9. Yin deficiency, remove Asarum Xi Xin and add Rehmannia Shu Di Huang, Dipsacus Xu Duan, Turtle Shell (Gui Ban)
10. Blood Stagnation, add Safflower (Hong Hua), Peach kernel (Tao Ren) and Frankincense (Ru Xiang)
11. Osteoarthritis, swap Rehmannia Shu Di Huang for Rehmannia Sheng Di Huang, add Earthworm (Di Long), Spatholobus Ji Xue Teng
12. Osteoarthritis with Kidney Yang deficiency, swap Rehmannia Shu Di Huang for Sheng Di Huang, and add Epimedium Yin Yang Huo, Curculigo Xian Mao
13. Lumbar Disc herniation, add Velvet Deer Horn (Lu Rong)
14. Also for Lumbar Disc Herniation, swap Codonopsis Dang Shen for Ginseng, and Rehmannia Shu Di Huang for Rehmannia Sheng Di Huang, and add Trachelospermum Luo Shi Teng.
15. Lower Back degeneration or Herniated Disc from severe Kidney deficiency, swap Rehmannia Shu Di Huang for Sheng Di Huang, and add Dipsacus Xu Duan, Cibotium Gou Ji.
This opens the channels, clears Cold, Wind and Damp from the channels, nourishes Qi and Blood, tonifies the Kidneys and Liver, and strengthens the Bones and Joints. It is a very good long-term treatment for chronic joint disease.
Because it can clear Wind and Damp from the channels, it can be used for joint disease associated with Numbness or Immobility, and can help some cases of mild Paralysis. It can also be prepared as a wine for a small glass to be taken daily. For long term use, powder or pill form can be used.
