Rhubarb and Aconite Decoction
TCM
Essentials from the Golden Cabinet (Jin Gui Yao Lue)
Boil in 5 cups of water until 2 remain (400 mls.). Divide into 3 equal doses.
It is wise to begin with a lower dosage of Aconite, increaseing if needed.
The dosage of Aconite and Rhubarb should be the same.
Warms the Interior, Purges Cold, Eases Pain
Abdominal pain with Constipation, Chills, Cold extremities, a white greasy tongue coating and a deep and wiry or slow pulse.
Primary formula for treating Constipation caused by Cold.
1. Constipation
2. Acute Abdomen (proven effective clinically)
3. Intestinal obstruction (uncomplicated)
4. Appendictis (uncomplicated)
5. Chronic Colitis
6. Ulcerative Colitis
7. Chronic Dysentery
8. Acute Pancreatitis
9. Chronic Renal Failure (proven effective)
10. Cold Hernia disorders
The above decoction is divided into 3 equal doses to be taken over the course of a day.
1. Not used in Heat conditions
2. Not used in Heart disease or those taking Heart medication
3. Avoid overdose
1. It is advisable in all decoction using Aconite to add Licorice.
2. Severe abdominal pain relieved by warmth, add Cinnamon twig (Gui Zhi and Paeonia Bai Shao.
3. Severe Cold pain in the Intestines, add Costus Mu Xiang and Cinnamon (Rou Gui)
4. Abdominal fullness with a greasy tongue coating, add Costus (Mu Xiang) and Magnolia bark (Hou Po)
5. Qi deficiency, add Astragalus Huang Qi and Codonopsis Dang Shen
6. Severe Qi Deficiency, add Ginseng
7. Spleen and Stomach Yang deficiency, add Ginseng, Ginseng and Licorice
8. Cold Hernia disorders with lower abdominal pain, add Fennel seed (Xiao Hui Xiang) and Cinnamon (Rou Gui)
9. Severe pain, add Cinnamon (Rou Gui), Corydalis Yan Hu Suo and Costus (Mu Xiang)
10. Chronic Renal Failure, add Motherwort (Yi Mu Cao and calcined Oyster Shell (Duan Mu Li), and use as an enema. This has been found clinically effective.
Wen Pi Tang is similar, but is better for cases with marked Qi deficiency
