Bone Cancer

Bone Cancer is either primary or secondary with secondary bone cancers being more common as primary Bone Cancer is fairly rare. There are over 30 types of primary Bone Cancer, the most common types being:
  • Osteosarcoma is the most common form of primary bone cancer
  • Chondrosarcoma, associated with cells that form cartilage
  • Ewing’s sarcoma
Sometimes tumors form in the soft tissue around bones and these are typically Sarcomas which are not actually Bone Cancer.

Main symptoms of Primary Bone Cancer may include
  • Swelling and/or tenderness of the bone
  • Difficulty of or painful movement, or loss of feeling in the limb
  • Fracture
  • Fatigue, Unexplained weight loss, Fever, Anemia

Diagnosis may be by X-ray, CT scan, MRI, Biopsy and blood test. As with many other Cancers, primary western treatment involves surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. A typical 5-year survival rate (depending on type, stage and age of the patient) is around 80–90%.
