Certain medicines have been recognised as strengthening the bones and joints. These medicines are often used in chronic Joint diseases such as Arthritis. As the Kidneys control the bones, Kidney weakness often leads to Bone weakness. Therefore, many of the medicines used to strengthen and heal bones are Kidney tonics.

A review into the most commonly prescribed herbal medicines by TCM doctors for Osteoporosis in Taiwan showed the following four herbs to be most used:
- Eucommia Du Zhong
- Dipsacus Xu Duan
- Salvia Dan Shen
- Achyranthes Niu Xi
The following formulas were most commonly used:
- Du Huo Ji Sheng Tang (21%)
- Zuo Gui Wan (17%)
- Shu Jing Huo Xie Tang (14%)
- Jia Wei Xiao Yao San (12%)
