* Artificial (‘ren-gong’, man-made) Bezoar is often used in patent medicines
** Water Buffalo horn concentrate now replaces Rhinoceros horn in a dose of 60 grams
*** Synthetic Musk is typically used in place of genuine Musk in modern times.
Preparation:
Powder and form Honey pills each weighing 3 grams. Traditionally wrapped in Gold leaf.
Function:
Clears Heat and Toxin, clears Phlegm, open the Orifices of the Mind, calms the Mind and Spirit
Use:
The following conditions will manifest with High Fever, restlessness, irritability, a deep red tongue and a rapid pulse.
1. High Fever with Delirium, Irritability, Coma
2. Convulsions associated with High Fever
3. Acute Encephalitis
4. Acute Meningitis
5. Acute Hepatitis
6. Acute Pneumonia
7. CVA
8. Hepatic Coma
Dose:
One pill (3 grams) twice daily
Cautions:
1. Not used during Pregnancy.
2. Avoid in conditions without marked Heat.
3. Not used long-term due to Arsenic and Cinnabar content.
Modifications:
1. As noted above, sucbtiutes for Musk and Rhinoceros horn are used in modern times.
2. Cinnabar can be removed.
Similar Formulas:
Zhi Bao Dan
This formula focuses on clearing Heat and Toxin. Its ability to opening the orifices (sense organs) and clearing Phlegm is secondary. Zhi Bao Dan has similar functions and uses, but is more focused on clearing Phlegm-Heat and opening the Orifices of the Brain.
These types of formulas have been very important in the treatment of severe Infection with High Fever. They are credited with saving many lives in the past.
