Picture American Materia Medica This section deals with remedies from both North and South America.

Note the American Materia Medica is different from the other traditional Medicine systems and the Materia Medica they used. This is primarily because:
  1. The Americas were not in direct and constant contact with the other systems of the Silk Road
  2. There was not the scale of ancient Formulas used over vast time and area.
  3. The American Herbs were a later edition to the ‘global’ Materia Medica when compared to other herbs.

Despite this, the American Materia Medica has had a profound impact on the modern Western Herbal practice. For this reason, it is necessary to consider these herbs for the modern integration of Traditional and Modern Herbal Medicine.

Note that many of the American remedies that were imported from Europe will be available in the Materia Medica of Herbal Medicine page. Several medicines not of American origin (such as Buchu) are added here because they were primarily used by American practitioners.
